Safety in Our Schools

Guidelines and Procedures

Secure Entrances

Visitors may enter school buildings ONLY through the main entrance.  Other entrances are locked.

In addition, video cameras have been placed at each entrance, and under some circumstances visitors will have to wait until the door is electronically opened.

Sign In and Wear a Badge

All visitors are required to sign in at the main office of each school and obtain a visitor's badge which must be worn while on school grounds.  Visitors MUST have a scheduled appointment if they wish to go to any classrooms.

When Students Leave During the School Day

Students who must leave school during the regularly scheduled school day must go to the main office to sign out BEFORE leaving school grounds. Students must have a vailid medical or other reason to be released early.

Practice Drills

Students and staff will participate in several emergency preparedness drills throughout the school year.  These will include actual lockdowns at both the elementary and middle/high school buildings, as well as emergency evacuation drills.

Fingerprinting

When the district hires a new teacher or other employees who will have direct contact with students for at least five days during the school year, that person must be fingerprinted as part of a mandatory backgound check.

Fingerprinting is also required for existing staff members when they are promoted to a higher job (i.e. when an aide is then hired as a teacher, or when a teacher is hired as an administrator).

Defibrillators Required

Like all public schools in New York State, St. Johnsville is required to purchase a defibrillator for each school building that can be used during medical emergencies.  Appropriate training is provided to those who will be using them.

Under requirements of the New York State SAVE Act, the St. Johnsville Central School District has established a number of emergency preparedness procedures designed to help ensure the well being of all students.  While specifics of those procedures are confidential, please be assured that all staff have been given written directions to follow in the event of a wide variety of emergencies.
